How many crunches? How many sets? How long should you hold a plank? Here's a simple framework based on general strength training principles that also apply to your abs.
Weekly volume
Research on muscle growth generally suggests that around 10–20 hard sets per muscle group per week works well for many people. For abs, a practical range is:
| Level | Hard sets per week | Sessions |
|---|---|---|
| Beginner | 6–10 | 3–4 short sessions |
| Intermediate | 10–16 | 4–6 sessions |
| Advanced | 12–20 | 3–6 sessions |
A "hard set" ends within a couple of reps of failure, with good form.
Rep ranges
- Weighted exercises (cable crunch, weighted crunch, hanging leg raise): 6–15 reps
- Body-weight dynamic exercises (crunch, reverse crunch, twists): 12–25 reps
- Isometric holds (plank, side plank, hollow hold): 20–60 seconds, or several short 8–10 s holds
When you can do more than about 25 reps or hold for more than 60–90 seconds easily, make the exercise harder instead of doing more. See progressive overload for abs.
Rest between sets
- Body-weight circuits: 10–30 seconds between exercises, 45–90 seconds between rounds
- Weighted ab exercises: 45–90 seconds between sets
Example sessions
Beginner (8 minutes)
- Dead bug: 2 × 8 per side
- Crunch: 2 × 12
- Knee side plank: 2 × 20 s per side
- Reverse crunch: 2 × 10
Intermediate (12 minutes)
- Hollow hold: 3 × 25 s
- Bicycle crunch: 3 × 20 total
- Lying leg raise: 3 × 12
- Side plank: 2 × 30 s per side
Advanced (15 minutes)
- Hanging leg raise: 3 × 8–10
- Weighted crunch: 3 × 12
- Ab wheel rollout: 3 × 8
- Weighted Russian twist: 3 × 20 total
How AbBlitz sets your volume
When you choose your level and 5, 10 or 15 minutes per day, the app sets the exercises, sets, reps, hold times and rest for each day, and increases them as the weeks progress. Each exercise in the library also shows its default sets and reps.
Quality beats quantity
Fifteen slow, controlled crunches beat fifty fast ones. If your form breaks down, the set is over. See how to do a crunch.
Frequently asked questions
How many ab exercises per workout?
Three to six, covering different zones.
Is 100 crunches a day good?
It's not harmful for most people but inefficient. Fewer, harder reps with variety work better.
How long should I hold a plank?
30–60 seconds with perfect form is plenty for most people.
Do abs need high reps?
Not necessarily. They respond to moderate reps with enough challenge, like other muscles.
