Ramadan changes your daily rhythm: no food or water from dawn to sunset, later evenings and often less sleep. You can keep your core strong and even make progress with a few smart adjustments.
When to work out
| Timing | Pros | Cons |
|---|---|---|
| Before iftar (30–60 min) | Eat right after training | Low energy, no water during the workout |
| 1–2 hours after iftar | Fueled and hydrated | Can feel heavy; schedule clashes |
| After taraweeh / before suhoor | Fully fueled | Can affect sleep |
For short ab workouts, just before iftar works well for many people: keep it light and short. For harder sessions, after iftar is usually better.
A Ramadan core routine (8 minutes)
Low intensity, no jumping:
- Dead bug: 8 per side (guide)
- Forearm plank: 30 s (guide)
- Crunch: 12 (guide)
- Side plank: 20 s per side (guide)
- Reverse crunch: 10 (guide)
- Bird dog: 8 per side (guide)
Two rounds. Stop if you feel dizzy or unwell. In AbBlitz, choose 5 or 10 minutes a day during Ramadan to keep the streak going without overdoing it.
Eating at suhoor
- Protein: eggs, yogurt, cheese, beans, ful medames
- Slow carbs: oats, whole-grain bread
- Fiber and water-rich foods: fruit, vegetables
- Limit salty foods, which increase thirst
Eating at iftar
- Break the fast with water and dates, as is traditional
- Then a balanced plate: protein, vegetables, a portion of carbs
- Go easy on fried foods and sweets, which make it easy to overeat
- Spread food over the evening rather than one huge meal
Hydration
Aim to drink water steadily between iftar and suhoor rather than all at once. Soups, fruit and vegetables help.
Protecting muscle
- Keep protein high at both meals (protein for abs)
- Keep some strength or core training going
- Prioritize sleep where you can
Health note
People with diabetes, pregnant women, and anyone with a medical condition should consult a doctor about fasting and exercise.
A sample Ramadan day
| Time | What to do |
|---|---|
| Suhoor | Eggs, oats or whole-grain bread, yogurt, fruit, water |
| Daytime | Light activity, rest when you can |
| 30 min before iftar | Short core routine (8 minutes) |
| Iftar | Water and dates, then a balanced plate |
| Evening | Water steadily, a protein snack if needed |
| Before sleep | Water |
Keep expectations realistic: Ramadan is a great month to maintain strength and habits, even if big progress waits until after.
