Ab Workout for Men: Build a Thick, Visible Six Pack

An ab workout for men that builds thick, defined abs: weighted crunches, hanging leg raises, ab wheel and planks, plus how to lose the fat that hides them.

By Ayoub Farid · · 2 min read

Many men carry their fat around the belly, which means their abs often show last. The fix has two parts: build thicker abs so they show through more easily, and lose enough fat to reveal them. This workout handles part one.

The workout

Train it 3 times a week. Rest 45–60 seconds between sets.

ExerciseSets × reps
Hanging leg raise (or lying leg raise)3 × 8–12
Weighted crunch3 × 12–15
Ab wheel rollout (or plank)3 × 8–10 (or 45 s)
Russian twist with weight3 × 20 total
Side plank2 × 30–45 s per side

Hanging leg raise

Hang from a bar, curl your pelvis up as you raise your legs. No swinging. Guide.

Weighted crunch

Hold a plate or dumbbell on your chest. Abs grow with load like any muscle.

Ab wheel rollout

Roll out only as far as you can keep your back from sagging. Guide.

Weighted Russian twist

Light weight, controlled rotation. Guide.

Side plank

Builds obliques and spine stability. Guide.

No gym? Body-weight version

AbBlitz's advanced level uses harder variations like V-ups, L-sits, dragon-style holds and hanging work when you choose full equipment.

The belly fat problem

Men often see upper abs at around 12–14% body fat and lower abs closer to 10%. If you can't see anything yet, the most impactful change is your diet:

Don't neglect big lifts

Squats, deadlifts and overhead presses demand serious core bracing. If you lift, keep them in your program. See combine abs with strength training.

The V-cut

The V-shaped lines above the hips come from the lower abs, obliques and very low body fat. See how to get V-cut abs.
