Combine Abs With Strength Training: How to Program Both

How to combine ab workouts with strength training: when to train abs, how much core work lifters need, weekly splits and avoiding fatigue before lifts.

Squats, deadlifts, overhead presses and rows already demand a lot from your core. Direct ab training adds the thickness and definition that heavy lifts alone may not build. Here's how to fit both into one plan.

Do lifters need direct ab work?

Big lifts train your core mainly as a stabilizer. Studies comparing heavy squats and deadlifts with direct ab exercises generally show the lifts activate trunk muscles strongly, but crunch- and leg-raise-type exercises load the rectus abdominis more directly. For maximum ab development, add 2–4 short ab sessions per week.

When to train abs

  • After your main lifts, never before heavy squats or deadlifts
  • On upper-body days if your lower days are very demanding
  • Short daily sessions on non-lifting days work too

How much ab work?

About 6–12 hard sets per week of direct ab work is plenty for most lifters on top of heavy compound lifts. See ab workout sets and reps.

Exercise choices for lifters

  • Weighted crunch or cable crunch
  • Hanging leg raise (guide)
  • Ab wheel rollout (guide)
  • Pallof press and suitcase carries for anti-rotation
  • Side planks (guide)

See the gym ab workout for a complete session.

Fatigue management

If your core is sore before heavy lifts, cut ab volume or move ab sessions further from lower-body days. A tired core leads to worse bracing under load.

Frequently asked questions

Should I train abs before or after lifting?

After, so your core is fresh for heavy lifts.

Do squats and deadlifts give you abs?

They strengthen your core, but direct ab work builds more visible definition.

Can I train abs every day if I lift?

Light stability work daily is fine; keep harder ab sessions to 2–4 per week.

Should I wear a belt?

For heavy lifts some people use one; it's not needed for ab training.
